Since 1949, the Lt. Joseph P. Kennedy, sponsored by the Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi, has blossomed into a beautiful educational program that has provided elementary through high school education. The school program serves children who are developmentally disabled or autistic. Students benefit from a low student to teacher ratio, in a self-contained environment, giving them a better sense of comfort and security than school districts can offer.

The program enhances students' growth and development, and increases their capabilities for independence, productivity and participation in the most normal and least restrictive environment. The Lt. Joseph P. Kennedy School continues to provide students with opportunities to reach their full potential, not only academically, but socially as well. In addition to their academic lessons, students participate in pre-vocational skills classes to prepare them for job training and independent living. Sports, field trips and other special events are included throughout the year just as they would be at any public school district, and students at the high school level look forward to their annual prom.

In 2005, the dedication of the Sr. Anne Mary Rischar Center provided the much needed room for the increasing enrollment at the Kennedy School. The new addition featured the Shirey Family Gymnasium, which allowed students the ability to move around and do the necessary physical activities they were unable to perform in the constraints of their classrooms. The new addition has also provided additional classrooms and a computer room, where higher functioning students are able to learn the new technology. The necessary upgrades are essential in strengthening the future of the school.
